San Francisco, CA – Friends of artist Ninette Lewis kicked off ¡Presente! your VOICE your ART your COMMUNITY on Friday, May 18, by blessing Plaza 16, the 16 th Street BART Plaza. Performers, artists, and community members gathered to open the new art exhibit, The Orishas in the Mission, show off their own talents, and learn about some of the organizations in the Mission.
Ninette Lewis’ illustrations caught the eye of many passing by the Plaza. After the official opening, crowds of onlookers met with the artist to discuss and admire her work – and even got to meet two of the women from her illustrations - while folk singer Chantelle Tibbs took to the stage with her guitar. After lightening the steps of those passing by with her sultry tunes, Tibbs painted t-shirts with her handmade, custom designed stencils for Plaza-goers, also offering a selection of stencils available from her clothing line, Wear Me Naked.
Warming up for their Carnaval performance, Jambory, the Afro-Peruvian percussion group from Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, finally got a chance to perform at the Plaza, having been rained out during their performance at Love Your Mission Day in February. Dancers in flowing white skirts moved to the drumbeats
Representing their community and their services, many neighborhood and city organizations took in the afternoon’s events, distributing water and information to those who were interested.
Finishing off the afternoon, and stopping crowds as usual, a group of youth breakdancers from CELLspace’s Def Ed program pulled out a few moves. Dancing without their usual traveling linoleum floor, we were impressed that they didn’t break anything – other than some sweet moves.
