SAN FRANCISCO — The Mission Community Council is pleased to announce Love Your Mission Day at Plaza 16, a free, public cultural event has been postponed from Thursday, February 8, to Monday, February 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. The event will take place at Plaza 16, the 16th Street BART Station’s southwest plaza, in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA.
The public is invited to enjoy:
- The opening of “Ladies Night,” a series of individual portraits of Mission Women by Kari Orvik. The photographs were taken at the Mission Neighborhood Center with participants from Ladies Night.
- Meet the women behind the portraits. The women from Ladies Night, a weekly drop-in program for homeless women in the Mission and SF’s only women’s syringe exchange, will be on site to speak to the public. Ladies night is a collaboration of Mission Neighborhood Resource Center, San Francisco Needle Exchange, Women’s Community Clinic, Care Through Touch Institute and the Street Outreach Services. Since 2004, this collective effort has created a safe, women-only space where ladies can get support to make life on the streets more bearable and make positive changes.
- Make your own Valentine’s using rubber stamps and paper, courtesy of AUTUMN EXPRESS. Postage provided!
- DJ and rap presentations by youth from Horizons Unlimited of San Francisco’s Audio Production and DJ classes.
- “Jambory,” The Good Samaritan Family Resource Center’s Teen Program will be presents a fusion of traditional and contemporary Afro-Latino percussion, dance, and poetry, in one performance. The Good Samaritan Family Resource Center is committed to supporting and improving the quality of lives of immigrant families by providing services that are accessible, culturally and linguistically appropriate, and focused on promoting resilience in children and families.
- Information tables from community organizations like:
- Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco's oldest alternative art space (est. 1965) with a long history of presenting new and experimental work in the fields of literature, theater, music, dance and the visual arts, and also in nurturing and supporting the Bay Area's cultural community through service, technical support, and mentorship programs. Intersection provides a place where provocative ideas, diverse art forms, artists, and audiences can intersect one another.
- Community Music Center, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization with the mission of making music accessible to all people, regardless of their financial status. They are also the Bay Area’s oldest community arts organization, the largest provider of low-cost, high quality music classes and concerts serving over 2200 students and 12,000 concert goers each year.
- Mission Neighborhood Resource Center, a safe and clean space for the homeless communities of the Mission, and sponsor of Ladies Night.
- Information about car seat safety, immunization provided by Mission Neighborhood Health Center, a comprehensive community-based health center and leader in advocacy efforts for culturally and linguistically competent health and human services for Latinos in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area
The Second Annual Love Your Mission Day! at Plaza 16 is organized by the Mission Community Council's Plaza 16 Project. The Mission Community Council is a collaborative network of over 35 Mission non–profit organizations, businesses, faith groups, and public departments committed to promoting the vitality of the Mission District. The project aims to create a safe and beautiful place by promoting community-oriented cultural activities. This past October, the group organized “¡Arte Libre!,” a free community event featuring local break dancers, visual art, activities and community performances.
The event is free and open to the public. It is also wheelchair accessible.
