SAN FRANCISCO — The Mission Community Council is pleased to announce MiCoCo Summer Fiesta at Plaza 16, a free, public cultural event on Friday August 24th, 2007, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. The event will take place at Plaza 16, the 16th Street BART Station’s southwest plaza, in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA.
MiCoCo Summer Fiesta is a great opportunity for community members, artists and service organizations to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of Mission District Organizations summer programs. At the same time, it is a chance to see what organizations have upcoming in their calendars and projects and see how community members can participate in the future.
The public is invited to enjoy musical performances, participate in activities led by the council and other organizations such as coloring, games and arts and crafts. The Mission Community Council has also invited various Mission District non-profit organizations to display information and resources that benefit the diverse population of the Mission district.
Art Opening and Display:
Galeria de la Raza Youth Media Program The Galeria’s Youth Media Project is a new mentorship based multimedia arts program in the heart of the Mission. Designed to include the Misssion’s diverse history as well as address the issues critical to our communities, the program’s focus is to engage participants through experiential media workshops that integrate graphic arts, web design, documentary film and music producing. Participants will have accesss to Galería artists both as teachers and mentors who have developed programming that integrates the relationship between creative activity, social awareness, and community building . Set in Galería’s Studio 24 space the workshops engage participants in the creation of art that pushes boundaries by channeling the energy and creativity of the Mission while cultivating a critical perspective of the social, cultural and political life that makes our community team with artistic energy.
Performances by:
- Francisco Herrera, a long time Mission District and Resident Francisco is currently working with the Roxie Theater and New College of California. Francisco offers his exquisite vocals accompanied by the guitar at this summer’s event.
- DefEd BreakDance Graduates, a favorite performance of the Plaza 16 project, this group of young people always forms a crowd with their dancing skills and break dance moves and freezes. They are graduates and past participants from the DefEd program located at Cell Space.

- The Roxie New College Film Center is the San Francisco Bay Area's most provocative arthouse cinema, and a dynamic learning venue for New College of California media studies students. - Mission Neighborhood Resource Center is located in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission district at 16th and Capp St. It has many resources available for people on the move or for those who are looking to better themselves by getting off the streets
- New Generation Health Center embodies a mission where they empower youth to make informed positive decisions about their health and future, particularly to their reproductive health and planning their families. They do this by offering accessible, youth friendly clinical services and educational programs in San Francisco’s highest risk communities. http://www.ucsf.edu/newgen/
- Community United Against Violence (CUAV) is a multicultural organization working to end violence against and within our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) communities. - Arriba Juntos has a mission is to promote economic self-sufficiency for San Franciscans and their families through occupational training and employment opportunities. www.arribajuntos.org
- Clinica Esperanza Inaugurated in 1989 by the Mission Neighborhood Health Center Board of Directors, Clínica Esperanza (Clinic of Hope) provides a wide range of services to over 400 enrolled HIV+ patients each year. Clínica Esperanza was one of the first community-based health services centers in California and the U.S. to build a continuum of HIV prevention and treatment services focused on the needs of the Latino community. In addition to being culturally-specific, it is the only healthcare facility in San Francisco with the capacity to serve monolingual Spanish-speaking clients. Utilizing an interdisciplinary model, Clínica Esperanza has earned the attention and respect of public health officials and health practitioners in the community as well as throughout the U.S.
- Mission SRO Collaborativeprogram works in partnership with St. Peter’s Housing Committee and the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center to provide outreach, education, social services, community building and community organizing activities for residents of SRO (Single Room Occupancy) residential hotels throughout the Mission District. The focus in this collaborative will be Fire Prevention and Emergency Preparedness, Tenant Rights education, housing referrals, improving conditions in the hotels through code enforcement, and engaging tenants to participate in city and community forums on issues that affect their lives.
- Pacific National Bank Established in 1887 during San Francisco's early shipping and trading days, the bank provided financing for home building as the area grew. Pacific National Bank has a rich history and continues to be a meaningful part of the greater San Francisco Bay Area community. www.pacificnational.com
MiCoCo Summer Fiesta at Plaza 16 is organized by the Mission Community Council as a part of the Plaza 16 Project. The Mission Community Council is a collaborative network of over 35 Mission non–profit organizations, businesses, faith groups, and public departments committed to promoting the vitality of the Mission District. The project aims to create a safe and beautiful place by promoting community-oriented cultural activities. This past February, the group organized Love Your Mission Neighborhood Day a free community event featuring local break dancers, visual art, activities and community performances.
The event is free and open to the public. It is also wheelchair accessible.
